Classical Style
Highbury Gardens has the look of a classical London mansion scheme. The mixed-tenure scheme of 119 one, two and three bedroom apartments was created by urban development and investment company, First Base. It was designed by Porphyrios Associates to respond to the context of two adjoining conservation zones of Georgian and Victorian architecture, hence its classical aesthetic. The scheme is designed for longevity, both physically and culturally. London stock brick and creamy renders were chosen for the exteriors to ensure the new development sits comfortably with its older, more traditional neighbours. Behind the classical exterior, however, Highbury Gardens incorporates latest technologies, including modular bathroom pods. The homes are designed to meet level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes with 20 per cent of the development’s energy demand being met by on-site renewable energy technologies. Green features include: solar thermal panels on the roof; rainwater harvesting; and integrated recycling in apartment kitchens. As part of its sustainable approach, the scheme is car-free and instead incorporates 131 secure and covered cycle parking bays for residents. Many of the apartments are dual aspect, and the site layout gives residents a pleasant green aspect, while respecting neighbouring buildings. The homes are built around a private landscaped garden containing trees, benches and low level planting. Ground floor apartments have private gardens while upper floors benefit from balconies and terraces where possible. The scheme complies with Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes standards
