Capital Conversion
Seen from the street this former Ministry of Pensions building in west London appears little changed. The grand arched stone portals and elevations of the early 1920s design by Whitehall’s then principal architect James G West remain, but on the inside the building has been transformed. Offices have been replaced by apartments in a dramatic makeover that includes two tranquil internal courtyards. The scheme was developed by Berkeley Homes and incorporates 164 affordable one, two and three-bedroom apartments for A2Dominion Group. Design was by Amos Partnership. The homes are in a leafy part of Acton and help in meeting demand for housing in west London. The scheme provides affordable homes for individuals, couples and families on a shared ownership basis, offering one bedroom apartments at from £140,250 for a 55 per cent share. The apartments include such features as electric immersion heater with electronic timer control for hot water storage tank and contemporary-style kitchens while the development offers access to a car club.
