The Square, Kennington, London
The Square provides much needed affordable housing for Londoners. Designed by Panter Hudspith for affordable homes provider Affinity Sutton, the scheme provides 20 shared ownership homes and 76 properties for rent.
The design is characterised by four apartment buildings arranged round a central courtyard, which range in height from four to nine storeys. These are linked on two sides by maisonettes with traditional private gardens, which are topped by apartments with roof terraces. Two types of buff-coloured brick have been chosen for the exteriors providing warmth, texture and an association with nearby Georgian buildings.
Accommodation ranges from one-bedroom to four-bedroom homes, with more than half of units being two-bedroom apartments. All homes exceed minimum space standards and have dual or triple aspect for good cross ventilation and daylighting. The scheme is designed to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4.
A series of outdoor communal spaces have been planned across the site. The private gardens range from 20-50 square metres, and all other apartments benefit from balconies. Top floor homes have roof terraces of up to 36 square metres. Green roofs are also installed on the development, while other roofs are equipped with photovoltaic panels.
