Emmeline and Christabel are two of three abandoned1960s concrete high-rise tower blocks that developer Urban Splash bought from Manchester city council and rescued with its now trademark treatment. With architect Union North they saw the potential to make the towers appeal to private buyers. For the makeover, the towers were given a sassy new outfit, their lugubrious grey concrete and brick panels and small balconies being replaced with bright wooden cladding and floor to ceiling windows. The public loved the new look, as did the awards judges. |
