The concept of a modern single- storey flat-roof extension on the back of a Victorian sandstone villa in a conservation area would inevitably spark a lively debate- but after nine months of design development permission was granted for a crisply detailed building. The steel-framed structure is partly clad in stone to match the house, before becoming completely modern with white walls at the far end with a large overhanging roof. The extension opens directly off the hall and dining room of the original house with wooden flooring to match. The transition between the old house and the new extension is marked visually by two round skylights and recessed low-voltage lighting in the suspended ceiling on two sides of the extension. The new family room has a full-height ceiling with clerestory windows on three sides, which makes the flat roof appear to float. Photography: Keith Hunter (0141 886 4503) |
