The regeneration of Ballymun in Dublin is a massive, and long-term enterprise, but it is also a showcase of best practice in housing design. One of the latest schemes completed there is Balcurris, developed by Ballymun Regeneration and designed by O’Mahony Pike.
The project follows on from the masterplan study for the regeneration of the area, which O’Mahony Pike co-authored with architect MacCormac Jameson Prichard. The first phase of Balcurris comprises a three storey terrace, and two-storey courtyard housing blocks. The second phase encloses the western edge of the new Balcurris Park with a three-storey terrace, but the rear of the homes is the height of a typical two-storey suburban house. At the end of terraces, there are also low rise apartments.
Houses and apartments combine charcoal brickwork and flat roofs with sensually curving white rendered staircases. The staircases break the black brick frontage of the terraces and form an end point at the terrace ends. In all the scheme makes a bold statement of optimism and confidence of the now changing Ballymun.
