Katherine Pooley Interiors was commissioned to completely redesign the interior of this imposing five-storey house in one of London’s classiest quarters. The client’s brief was to create a luxurious elegant home with neutral, modern, classic styling that would respect the house’s period detailing and grandeur. The designer chose a palette of soft tonal colours to enhance the sense of light and space, emphasizing the generous ceiling heights and large windows with light fabrics and white paintwork. Light stone flooring brightens the hallway and kitchen and blends with the original Portland limestone staircase, which has been fitted with a runner in soft beige colour. The dining room has French oak parquet flooring finished with a limed-white lacquer. The formal drawing room has a suitably grand look, with mirror, formal pelmet curtains, silk carpet, and significant furniture pieces such as full-size dining table, grand piano and home bar. Many of these features recreate the comforts of a grand period residence but are cleverly combined with the conveniences of modern living, such as plasma screens. The downstairs snug incorporates dark wood finishes, opulent textures, fur and leather. Approximately 90 per cent of the furniture in the house is bespoke and has been designed to meet the family’s requirements.
