Top quality architectural talent, innovative design, eye-catching marketing, and some of the most stylish living spaces around: that’s the winning formula the homebuilding industry has come to expect from Urban Splash. With Budenberg Haus Projekte, in Altrincham, Cheshire, the company has done it again.
The scheme was designed by Foster and Partners and actually comprises two buildings containing 213 apartments in all, 29 of which are for shared ownership. The two new buildings sit on either side of a retained building which has been converted to apartments in a design by Arkheion Architects. However, the new buildings make it clear that they are the stars of the show, cantilevering out boldly over the Bridgewater Canal which runs alongside the site.
Within the buildings there are 18 different apartment styles ranging from single level one bedroom homes with direct access to the garden to two bedroom duplexes, and from curved corner apartments to three bedroom penthouses with south facing terraces. Some apartments have double height living space with a curved ceiling, and all are enabled for home technology with broadband and digital access. Living in Budenberg Haus Projekte could never be dull.
Even the scheme’s name, actually taken from a previous occupant of the site, the Budenberg Gauge Company, is different. The site was home to part of an industrial estate, and is in an area of national importance to the development of engineering in Britain, hence the retention of one building on the site.
The judges said of the project: “It is an inspiring development”. One judge added the words: “pretty cool.” That just about sums up Budenberg Haus Projekte.
