The brief for this project was to refurbish a threestorey
listed house in Chelsea for an international
executive who planned to use the house both as a
city pad for relaxing and entertaining, and to spend
time with his family in the capital.
Daruma Design's response to the brief was to create
an interior that is masculine, minimalist, colonial and
ethnic. It contrasts white with rich reds and browns,
and glossy cupboards with sisal flooring and soft
leathers. Downstairs, a sleek minimalist background is the foil
for retro designer pieces, touches of warmth and
texture, and hints of colonialism. Technology is
incorporated into the home, with a flat screen
television and hidden speakers built into the glossy
B&B Italia units.
Upstairs is a male-looking study space with Ralph
Lauren wallpaper, glass panels, a classic red Eames
chair, and a walnut veneered cabinet that was built on
site. The bedroom has a more ethnic look with its
sisal flooring, dark wood bedside tables, and buffalo
leather tiles surrounding the chimneybreast.
The designer has even incorporated a few finishing
touches of curiosity, mystery and playfulness. Visitors
looking for the downstairs toilet will find it concealed
behind wallpapered panels. |
