Dick Place

Edinburgh

In June 2002 Andrew Doolan was posthumously awarded an RIBA award for the remodelling and extension of Dick Place, a Grade C listed house in Edinburgh. The house was converted into two flats: one on the ground floor and the other occupying the first floor and attic. Behind the two- storey steel framed glass extension, the first floor was remodelled to create a large kitchen/dining room with stainless steel and glass units, the old kitchen was converted into a well-equipped utility room and the old bathroom was converted into a modern shower room. The living room on the ground floor, with full height glazing on 3 sides facing a large pond, is paved with cream coloured Italian ceramic tiles that extend beyond the glass walls giving the impression the extension is floating on water front door The RIBA Judges described Dick Place as “an experimental fantasy in light and water” adding “The detailing is exquisite and quite subliminal to the composition.”
