Climbing up to 25 storeys high, the three towers that make up Barratt East London’s Elektron will make a mark on the east London skyline. The high-rise scheme’s apartments have balconies and terraces that look out to the Dome, Canary Wharf, the City and beyond.
Site operatives are, however, unable to admire the views. That is because they are enclosed in a specially created safe working environment. Our judges praised the “good, modern, safe construction technology” being applied in the creation of the scheme, notably the PERI CPP climbing protection system.
The system is designed and installed by the concrete frame contractor. It comprises anchors that are cast into the concrete floor slab, which receive brackets, which in turn receive the perimeter protection. Perimeter panels are lowered into position by tower crane to provide a safe working environment. As construction progresses, additional edge protection is provided.
This technology provides a safe working environment for site operatives and for the surrounding areas. It can also be a useful sales tool, as the external panels can serve as advertising hoardings.
Like its companion commendations and other entries in this award category, Barratt East London has applied innovation, rather than growing its own. The judges noted: “The entries in this category illustrate how genuinely difficult it is to do something innovative in the building industry”.
