With its conventional brick clad exterior and pitched roof, Powell Tuck Associates’ design for a Hertfordshire house at first appears simple and unpretentious. That’s exactly what the client wanted. The house has been built on a modest site, formerly occupied by a nondescript bungalow in a 1960s estate. The client’s brief was to replace the old property with a new home that would work within its context, be energy and space-efficient and would incorporate a workshop for the owner’s use. Tight site restrictions meant that only a minor re-scaling of the original house was possible in the replacement. Additional excavation works allowed the architect to create the floorspace required, as well as dramatic interior spaces. Garden design by landscape architect Dan Pearson Studio complements the design.
