La Concha started life as a 15th century granite barn which architect Jamie Falla converted and extended to create a three-bedroom house of 240 sq metres with a studio. Conceived as three distinct elements: sleeping, living and working, the barn is at the heart providing an open plan kitchen/living room on the ground floor with a full –height wide glass sliding door opening on to the West-facing timber deck and back garden beyond. Above the kitchen is a large mezzanine floor overlooking the double-height dining area. The sitting room has a wood-lined ceiling open to the glazed ridge of the roof, allowing daylight into the house. To the East side is a single storey extension with skylights in the roof of its two rooms- one a playroom with sliding doors opening off the kitchen and the other the studio. The family enter the house by the back door which is part of a two storey link between the old barn and a new granite-walled and fully glazed extension with two bedrooms on the ground floor and a spiral staircase to a master suite upstairs. In giving La Concha an RIBA Award the Judges praised its clever and immaculate detailing, especially in its use of sliding screens that open up and link rooms at will.” Photography: Karl Taylor (01481 729644)
