In the heart of the Barnsbury conservation of Islington Place, Dome Developments and London & Newcastle (Holdings) Plc. successfully collaborated to create an oasis of unashamed modernity surrounded by dignified late-Georgian and early- Victorian terraced houses. Once an industrial enclave occupied by a garage and a stonemason’s yard Lonsdale Place is now home to three mews and a detached house, which was the unanimous choice of the National Homebuilder Design Awards judges as the Best House in England and Best New House of the Year in the UK. The three mews houses were conceived as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional London mews, with a garage and secondary accommodation on the ground floor and the master bedroom and main living accommodation on the upper two floors. The glass block wall lets daylight into the hall, with the front door recessed to create a covered entrance. To satisfy planning restrictions the top floor had to be set back behind the front wall to create a double height reception area with a gallery that is reached by a one-off designed spiral staircase in solid maple, steel and glass. Proximity to neighbouring buildings required the rear wall of the master bedroom to be made of glass blocks, with windows on the side wall looking onto the landscaped courtyard. All three mews houses have a large roof terrace to the rear, but 15c has the largest patio at ground level and two parking spaces.
