The Nautilus apartments development is an award-winning scheme of 28 one and two bedroom holiday apartments, with a spectacular copper roof designed to represent 14 waves cresting on the nearby sea. Apart from its refreshing design, Nautilus is remarkable for the fact that the architect, client and main contractor was Guy Greenfield, a London-based architect. Having a gross internal area of 2,520 sq m (27,125 sq ft) and a construction cost of £2.65million, Nautilus was at the time the biggest project he had singularly undertaken. The plan of the apartments is based upon the logarithmic spiral of a nautilus shell, presenting a convex curve to the seafront, to give every apartment a panoramic view of the beach from its balconies. The concave curve of then rear elevation creates a sheltered parking area. The RIBA Award Jury praised this “exemplary architectural project that captures the contrasts and delights of the sea. It is a high density development that sets a new standard in design and has the potential to encourage regeneration”.
