Barratt West London and Assael Architecture merited a commendation for The Best House of One or Two Stories categories in the 2003 National HomeBuilder Design Awards for Neile House, one of three contemporary detached two-storey houses in built on the former Gas, Light and Coke Company’s works site in Westminster. This 1.5 acre site, recently used as offices for British Gas, has been developed to provide 204 new homes, comprising of 152 apartments, 49 flats and the three houses, realising a density of 136 homes to the acre, nearly twice as high the development density then stipulated under PPG3. Effectively a free-standing duplex penthouse on the ground with more than 1,250 sq ft of accommodation, Neile House was designed in the more logical but less conventional “upside down” way, with the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living rooms on the first floor giving better views and more privacy. Upstairs the open-plan living area has sitting, dining and kitchen areas with a highcurved ceiling and glass-block internal walls to give more light. |
