One Oak Farm

Springwood Avenue
Allerton
Liverpool
L25 7UN

Once a derelict Grade 11 listed 17th-century farmhouse, Oak Farm, with its mullioned windows and gabled slate roof was restored and extended to win praise from the RIBA Award judges who commended the high quality materials used and the careful attention to detail adding: “a carefully balanced and harmonious relationship between the old and the new” The warm red sandstone of the three outer walls of the original farmhouse remain unplastered internally, with the fourth side rebuilt with matching new sandstone and the original oak ceiling beams are exposed on both floors. The link between this building and the extension is fully glazed. Here, the north elevation facing the entrance courtyard is windowless, though there is a two storey modern oriel window in the otherwise blank west wall facing the entrance drive. The south –facing garden elevation is fully glazed on both floors. The ground floor of the new extension is one open-plan room, with a Burmese teak unit running the length of the room separating the wall of the kitchen units from the sitting and dining areas. With such attention to detail One Oak Farm was short-listed for the 2004 RIBA Manser Medal.
