An extension to a house originally designed in the early 1960s by Edward Cullinan, The Pavilion has been extensively remodelled- initially by Penoyre & Prasad (whose two storey extension earned a RIBA award in 1992) and subsequently by Knox Bhavan Architects who were commissioned in 2000 to design the new pavilion. The steel- framed single-storey building, 16 metres by 6 meters, is clad in local bricks to match the existing house, with red cedar boarding interspersed with narrow strips of double glazing, large aluminium framed windows and a long curved roof covered in copper strip. A freestanding curved pod, clad in weathered sycamore veneer in the centre of the pavilion divides it into two rooms with structural glass above to give acoustic separation between the two rooms. Superb joinery is evident everywhere with maple strip flooring throughout, oak bookcases at each gable end with sliding doors faced with a variety of exotic veneers, ranging from ebony to amboyna. Large sliding doors open on to the garden and oak –veneered panels hide radiators under the large fixed windows. Photography: Dennis Gilbert/ View (020 8870 9051)
