Providing contemporary design to the mass market
has long been a challenge for the major
housebuilders. Persimmon Homes Anglia is taking on
that challenge with this scheme in the traditional village
style community of Ravenswood.
Although most of Ravenswood looks traditional, the
community is in fact new and designed to a
masterplan that sets high standards in design and
layout. This scheme of 56 private sale homes and
22 affordable units for Flagship Housing Group will
offer the market contemporary home designs in a green setting.
The varied scheme includes a terrace around a
crescent, long radial finger blocks reaching out
towards an adjoining country park, and tower houses
to define entrances and corners. The buildings will be
finished in the restrained palette of materials that is
consistent across the community. Brick, white render
and Eternit slates are the dominant building finishes,
with sheet metal roofing and Suffolk Pink Trespa
boarding giving a contemporary take on the Suffolk
vernacular. The number of south-facing units is
maximised while reinforcing the built enclosure of the
public realm.
The landscape strategy for the site aims to permeate
the development with the nature of the country park.
A green gabion wall around the perimeter of the site is
echoed in similar planting softening the crescent
terrace. There will be soft and hard landscaping,
avenues of trees and a play area to create a green
amenity. There will also be home zone areas with
permeable surfaces.
