The Hamptons marks the start of an important regeneration of part of Gillingham’s waterside. It is intended as the first phase of a redevelopment of land surrounding Gillingham Marina and extends the existing marina facilities. The block of 24 apartments, designed by Goddard Manton Architects, looks squarely out onto the ‘out of water’ boat park to the south of the West Marina Basin. It is raised above the existing dock level over semi-basement car parking, an arrangement that provides flood protection for ground level homes and makes the most of the prime views out over the marina and beyond to the River Medway. At one end, the scheme rises to a landmark nine storey circular tower finished in bright white render. Adjoining buildings step down to four storeys and are clad in white acrylic render, and aluminium rainscreen panelling, with vertical bands of untreated cedar boarding. Aluminium framed glazing and clear glazed balconies complete the contemporary aesthetic. Unusually, the apartments comprise large three and four bedroom family homes and duplex homes, all having either balconies or roof terraces. The scheme is surrounded by landscaped gardens to provide a pleasant waterfront aspect.
