The centre of Walton on Thames is changing rapidly. Once home to a neglected 1960s built retail centre, the town now has new stores occupied by big name retailers, and an upward glance reveals a whole community of apartments above the stores, bringing urban living to the Surrey town.
The third phase of The Heart, a major scheme to regenerate the town centre is now coming to completion, and the smaller fourth phase will put the final piece of the regeneration in place. With The Heart, developer O&H Properties and EPR Architects have given the town centre a 750,000 sq ft new build, mixed use development comprising 53 retail units, a shopping mall, 379 apartments, a car park, library and health and fitness suite.
Already, there are clear signs that the transformation has had a positive impact. Major high street names are occupying the stores, and the first phase of residential has been released and is almost fully occupied. The residential element of the scheme is raised some 8 metres above ground level, and includes landscaped communal gardens. The gardens not only provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of the retail below, but help to create a sense of community. Apartment blocks range from three to six storeys in height, with sixth storey penthouses offering panoramic views.
