In 2001 the London Borough of Hounslow granted planning consent to a partnership between British Waterways, St George and Charles Church for a mixed-use residential and commercial development that would create 343 new homes at Brentford lock. The following year St George sold its 50 per cent stake in Brentford Lock Development to Crest Nicholson and the restructured joint venture went on to develop on the large island in the middle of the lock basin 173 apartments and 20 four –bedroom riverside houses, with the house prices ranging up to £825,000. The open-plan layouts of the houses make for flexibility, with the option of the living room on either the ground or first floor. In giving the Island an Award for Best Development of the Year the Evening Standard Judges said:”The canalside setting has inspired the architects.”
