The Kyoko House

Spectrum
London Road
Newport Pagnell

It is environmentally friendly, it is modern in design, it is built using offsite construction technology and it is aimed at the average housebuyer. This is the Kyoko house, developed by Crest Nicholson and designed by Sheppard Robson.

The starting point for this house was the Design for Manufacture competition, initiated by the government and run by English Partnerships, which challenged the housebuilding industry to build a high quality home within the budget constraints of the mass market. Crest Nicholson and Sheppard Robson were among the competition winners and are now delivering these innovative homes for real at the Spectrum development in Newport Pagnell. A key feature of the house design is a central lantern system, a void which brings daylight into the house, improves solar gain and provides passive ventilation. The lantern also gives the homes a distinctive visual trademark, emerging from the rooftop in an environmentally friendly re-interpretation of the chimney. The living/dining area has been orientated to maximise natural light and solar gain and has a bay area that leads to the garden. At first floor level, there are two bedrooms, both with vaulted ceilings, and two bathrooms. The master bedroom also has its own balcony.

The exterior of the house uses a mix of materials, including timber and white render. This combination of innovation and conventional comfort should give the homes a broad market appeal, and with the Kyoko selling at £184,850 at Spectrum, it is within the reach of many.
