The judges’ comments about The Village in St Austell were as varied as the traditional architecture of the scheme itself. Their expressions of praise included: “The scheme has a good community feel to it. There is great use of different design genres and colours. The varied street frontages are pleasing to the eye.”
The Village is the product of a partnership between Restormel Borough Council, housing association Westco and Midas Homes and provides mixed tenure homes, live-work homes, commercial space for start-up and established businesses, and retail space.
Although urban in its location, the scheme is village-like in nature, and is centred around a village green. The scheme architect, Alan Leather Associates, worked with the Prince’s Foundation to study the character and appearance of St Austell, and these researches informed the design of the new development. Building materials used include those traditional favourites: natural slate for roofs, slate tile hanging, colourful painted render, brick and weatherboarding.
Just like in the traditional village, The Village’s residents are forming their own community within St Austell. With workspace, shops and homes all within the development residents can lead a highly sustainable lifestyle, and get to know their neighbours.
