Upton is an exemplar development pioneering the
sustainable urban neighbourhood. It is promoted as
national best practice and is jointly sponsored by the
Homes and Communities Agency, the Prince's Trust
Foundation and Northamptonshire Borough Council.
David Wilson Homes worked with the Upton
framework plan, the Upton Design Codes and the site
development brief for site C on this scheme of 30
new homes designed by HTA Architects. The scheme comprises detached and semi-detached
villas ranging from 117 sq m to 266 sq m in size
which are innovative in their design and living spaces.
The overall proportions and forms of the buildings
reflect the local vernacular and differentiate the
development from typical executive homes.
The scheme translates the architectural integrity of
traditional building into a contemporary style that builds
on the local vernacular. The traditional one room deep
house prevalent in Northamptonshire is reinterpreted.
Rooms in the roof structure create dramatic upper
floor living spaces. Simple cubic volumes are added to
the basic house to increase the flexibility and
individuality of the living space and create attractive
south-facing microclimates adjacent to the house.
Innovative spaces - such as the two storey high south
-facing sun spaces - make the houses more
desirable rather than experimental. The different
house designs have been unified by a consistent roof
pitch and a palette of local building materials.
