Wall Hall Mansion truly lives up to its mansion title. It
dates from the eighteenth century, is grade 2
listed, has an illustrious history and has an impressive
castellated exterior.
Octagon bought the house and its grounds eight
years ago and has converted the mansion to seven
luxury homes, as well as building new homes in the
grounds. The mansion was in poor condition and the
painstaking process of restoration and conversion has
been a four-year project.
Architect Moxley Architects worked closely with the
conservation officers at Hertsmere Borough Council
to make sure the building layout remained as close to
the original plans as possible. This presented
challenges when dividing the mansion into seven
separate homes. The project also called for the
installation of acoustic separation between floors, while
at the same time retaining the decorative ceilings.
The architect wanted to use as many of the original
materials as possible, so wooden trusses from the old
chapel were used in the living area of one home.
Fireplaces were fully restored or replicated from old
photographs, and fine plasterwork has been restored.
Homes range from a second floor two bedroom
unit to a 6,000sq ft two-storey baronial style wing,
which incorporates the mansion's original silver vault.
Another home contains the mansion's former Great
Room, with its barrel-vaulted ceiling, pink marble
fireplace and stained glass windows. A third has a
dining room with carved wooden panelling. Each of
the apartments is a one-off. |
