big dwelle.ing

Big-dwelle.ing is more than a single house; it is the first in a planned range of micro-buildings.

The idea for the range came about when architect Ric Frankland investigated ways of creating small dwellings that could easily be adapted to various uses, as an alternative to mass market housing. The architect’s solution was ‘sheds for living’, later re-branded as ‘dwelle’.

The house is constructed from prefabricated timber cassettes, which allows the basic build to be completed in three weeks. Groundworks, service connections and main structure are built in the first week; cladding, windows and main internal fittings are installed in week two; and finishes and kitchen fitting take place in the final week.

The prototype design, which has already been refined following feedback, is intended for large-scale production, different internal configurations, and easy extension and individualisation.

The designers have taken into account key factors for the market such as sustainability, health and affordability. The house design can achieve level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes for materials, waste, water and energy, with home purchasers able to acquire renewable energy options to make their home zero carbon. Heating and ventilation systems, and the materials and finishes throughout the house, promote healthy living, with as many internal finishes as possible meeting Allergy UK’s Seal of Approval. The design can be adapted to meet Lifetime Homes standards, and provides more than 9 cubic metres of concealed storage space including a cloakroom, full-sized hanging wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, a recessed shower room cabinet and high-level storage in the living space.

The house is being marketed in the same way as a new car like BMW’s Mini, with buyers able to spend according to their budget and add to the basic model with a series of enhancements.
